Review on πŸ“Ά Ultimate Wireless HDMI Transmitter and Receiver Kits: Stream 4K from Mac, Laptop, PC, Smartphone to HDTV and Projector Wirelessly with the Powerful Wireless HDMI Dongle by Osoulo Sharp

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Informs sources of 1080p capabilities, not 4k. Does not support surround sound.

Short version: If you're looking for an easy way to connect your laptop or desktop computer, phone or tablet to a projector or TV for a meeting, this device will likely meet your needs. However, if you really want to use it in 4k, that might not happen. And if you're going to use it to set up a home theater or control the display for apps like games, you should probably look elsewhere. The 2 star rating is due to the fact that none of the sources I tested stream 4k video through this device and it doesn't support surround sound. How it works: This device transmits 1080p videos with the minimum settings required. However, there is a good chance that you will need USB power for the transmitter. If you're looking for a device that delivers 1080p video for sources where fast motion isn't an issue (e.g. slide presentations in a meeting), this will suit your needs perfectly. If you're looking for a way to watch 1080p movies or TV shows without an HDMI cable, 1080p video streams without too much lag, but with slight but noticeable stuttering between frames. Although this is practical, the quality is noticeably worse than with a direct connection with an HDMI cable due to a slight stuttering. I was able to stream 1080p 60Hz videos through this unit from 3 different computers and a Blu-ray player. Also, I was able to connect my phone directly to this unit's receiver via a Wi-Fi connection and mirror my phone's screen (Galaxy S9 with Samsung's "Smart View" feature). What doesn't work: 4k video, if you want to stream 4k, you're probably out of luck with this device. I tried this from a Windows 7 computer, a Windows 10 computer and a 4k Blu-ray player while the receiver from that unit was connected to my 4k projector. The supported resolution was only 1080p at 60Hz. 4k resolution was not detected as available at any frame rate. Any of these devices can easily drive a 4k resolution projector when connected directly with an HDMI cable, but none of them will work with this transmitter, regardless of the frame rate. The projector I tested with supports 4k at 30Hz (as well as 24Hz and 60Hz). They all work fine when connected directly to it with an HDMI cable, but not over this wireless setup. I looked at EDID. Information reported by this device and in fact it only tells the computer the native resolution of 1920x1080@60Hz and all other reported resolutions were lower. I have a screenshot of the EDID information transmitted from this device to my computer when this device's receiver was connected to my 4k projector. Surround Sound Surround sound is not supported. This device reports that only 2.0 PCM stereo audio is available regardless of what it is connected to. Even when its receiver is hooked up to a 7.1-channel AV receiver, it tells sources it only supports 2-channel stereo in the EDID information. I still tried overriding the EDID information and sending 5.1 channel audio, but only the front left and right channels passed. Of course, when I connect the same two devices directly with an HDMI cable, instead of using this wireless setup, the 5.1-channel PCM audio transmission works fine. Some other similar wireless HDMI transmitters mention in their product descriptions that they only support 2.0 channel PCM. Stereo sound, but this one doesn't mention that limitation. Even if you can get by with 1080p video with some stuttering, the lack of surround sound is likely to be a handicap if you're looking to use it to replace HDMI cables in a home theater setup. Other things to note: As stated in the product description, you may need to power the transmitter via USB when using it. When I first plugged it into my computer it would power on, connect and start streaming video, but after about 30-60 seconds of operation the transmitter would start rebooting every few seconds. Connecting it to USB power solved this problem. No stars are deducted for this as the product description and manual may require it, but it's just something to be aware of, especially if you're taking this to a meeting. Package: The package includes a transmitter, a receiver, 2 x USB-A to USB-C cables, and an HDMI cable with a length of about 18 inches. Note that while the necessary USB cables are included, USB power adapters are not included, so you will definitely need a USB power adapter for the receiver and possibly the transmitter as well. Either regular USB power adapters or USB ports on my computers worked fine in my tests.
