Recently bought an old "C" version of this lens. They say "It's not as sharp as 'N', the later version. I use it on Sony mirrorless cameras. I like it. I tested the sharpness by putting "C" on a tripod and a I used a promotional flyer as a test subject, about 16 meters away. Then I took another exposure with a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 at f8 and ISO 400. I chose a letter on the flyer to focus both lenses on and shot the flyer the same size for both exposures. and the two images compared 100%. It's hard to say if one was better than the other. However, I'm giving away the 50mm Nikkor f/1.8 band. relatively slow lenses . No more black screens to see through. The 500mm "C" version of the Nikkor was beaten like a dog for years. They just didn't have the tools we have now. IBIS does it The lens can shoot at 1 /80s compared to the new 500mm lenses like Sa myang is light years ahead of the Nikkor and has a comparable price. smooth as butter, and with Sony's Live View, focus zoom and peak level, it's a bomb. Bokeh is subordinate to image capture. The posted image was hand held at 160. @ iso 400 with window backlighting.
