You do the job! This is an integral part of any gate installation where you have balusters/spindles on one or both sides. We used one of these at the top of the gate on each side. The "flat" rubber bumpers that came with the gate worked great on the underside as they sat on a flat surface. So a set of 2 "Y" adapters did the trick. We actually used them on a Regalo gate, slightly enlarged the original Regalo holes (they come with a smaller diameter screw than KidCo) - and it worked great.
