on "fatter " alloy wheels (which are pretty standard now) they don't have as much grip.

I wish the hooks were a bit longer because as some others have pointed out they don't have as much grip on 'thicker' alloy wheels (which are pretty standard these days) as they do on stamped steel rims. The only place on my 2016 F-150 with factory alloy wheels to mount this unit is around the "thick" part of the tread, which also has some pretty sharp edges. To prevent the rims from "cutting" the surface of the hooks (and eventually damaging the rims), I carry a small piece of high durometer rubber with me - you can get it from McMaster for almost free. The 1/8" piece between the rim and the hook doesn't seem to affect grip or security, but it definitely reduces the chance of damaging something.
