I live in Hawaii and use a spring that collects water from the gutters and sends it to a large holding tank. Downspouts have filters to remove leaves etc. The water is then pumped through a "whole house" filtration system. Here I use pleated paper filters, starting with a 20 micron, then a 5 meter, then a 1 meter and finally a UV filter. I use glass filter canisters so I can see when the filters are getting dirty. I just pull them out and flush them out of the hose and they're good for another two or three rounds before changing them.
