Review on Fujitsu ScanSnap S1100i Mobile Scanner for PC/Mac by Prince Ruffins

Revainrating 5 out of 5

An absolutely superb handheld scanner with very few flaws.

Outstanding compact scanner and supporting software ecosystem. I bought it for my wife to scan the thousands of small family and historical photos she has accumulated over the years and digitize them for use in her online genealogy system (Ancestry). Installing the software on her 27-inch iMac with Yosemite (OS X 10.10.) opened the photo inside and pressed the blue "Scan" button. With a 15 minute internet search I couldn't find any further information on the differences. I've noticed that the retail price on Revain for an older (circa 2011) SnapScan 1100 is actually $60 more than what I paid, but all the information I can gather is that the 1100i is the newest model . I can't explain why so many people are still buying an older device at a higher price. I can say that the 1100i scanner is solidly built and feels good in the hand. The software package is well designed for "pu sh" which Fujitsu has defined as the norm for this product (and to be honest I have to agree with them after an hour of use in this way of working the workflow). You'll see some people complaining about the lack of a TWAIN driver for the 1100/1100i, but you don't really need any software. "Pull" images through this low-volume scanner; You can set direct push links to any software you want to use to achieve the same effect. For example, I set up the software to upload into the TechSmith SnagIt image editor and it worked great right from the start. For those reviewers who just don't consider this scanner due to the lack of a TWAIN driver, you're missing a great opportunity with this little guy. Others wonder about the impossibility of pushing mountains of paper through the 1100i; This minute scanner was not developed for this. It's designed for quick, easy, and hassle-free scanning of small documents, photos, and receipts. Anything over 10-20 pages (manual feed) and you'll probably want to consider a larger, specialized scanner for this purpose. Advantages: 1. Very small, light weight.2. Robust build quality.3. USB powered, silent operation.4. The mud is easy to operate and use; You don't even need a manual as everything just works and makes sense.5. Simple special scanner for small documents and easy operation.6. An excellent software package that appears to be coded specifically for Mac/OS X. Huge software reviews.7. Nice long USB cable to keep the scanner out of the way when not in use.8. Very simple mechanics and intuitive controls. They only "know" how to open the scanner to clear the paper jam.9. A typical Fujitsu quality product. Disadvantages: 1. Only one-sided scanning. I knew this was going to happen, but it would still be nice to keep this form factor and have duplex scanning.2. There is no case; despite the high price, no carrying case is included.3. The software is a bit "strange" when installing, since six different packages are installed at the same time. But they install without incident.4. The price is a bit high, especially when compared to similar Canon products which are 40% cheaper. But I'm not at all dissatisfied with SnapScan and I think I got excellent value for money. Verdict: The Fujitsu SnapScan 1100i is a clear winner and deserves a solid five-star rating. In fact, I'm so impressed with this scanner that I'm only buying a second one to take with me on trips so I can continue my ongoing quest to eliminate paper.
