Change batteries frequently, quickly stops working.

After a few months of owning the device the flashing red light stopped working again. I thought it was a battery issue as the device required a battery change every 2-3 weeks. However, the battery contacts are rusted. For real? Has non-galvanized metal been used for the outdoor product's electrical contacts? The new batteries did not fit and had to be discarded.
