This hammer is VERY well made! I'm impressed. It withstands driving of 1-1/8" x 36" steel stakes very well into all soil types (clay, rocky, frozen, etc.). The black pen image is misleading. The whole hammer is red. Although it doesn't matter. The weight frustrates me. If I buy a 9 pound hammer I expect the hammer head to weigh about 9 pounds. This "9 pound" hammer weighs just under 9 pounds including the handle and all. Because of this, the head is much lighter than 9 pounds, making it too small for the work I bought it for. Hoping the deadblow feature could make up the difference, I tried it out at work for a few days. This means I cannot return it. Guilty. Then I bought the 12 pound version. It's also VERY well done. It has the same problem but is a decent replacement for my old work hammer (which was an 8.5 lb double-ended steel hammer, by the way). In the end, that's a lot of money for a hammer. If it continues to hold up as it has so far, I would definitely recommend this hammer. but buy more than you think you need! UPDATE: When it's cold outside these hammers break. See photo. I will not buy another.
