Review on ๐Ÿ’พ Enhance MacBook Pro Retina 13" Storage with BASEQI Aluminum microSD Adapter by Branden Type

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great adapter, perfect fit, really plug in and forget

So I bought this for my mid 2014 Retina MacBook Pro as I realized pretty quickly that 128GB of storage wasn't enough for what I had on my using MacBook Pro. This is enough to store applications, music and even some games. But I like to keep movies and TV shows on my MacBook as I really like the look of the screen and the battery lasts all day. I've seen many of these adapters all over Revain, but what struck me was the fact that these can be removed without the use of tools. Some adapters are the same but with protruding plastic parts. (This destroys the idea of a plug-in-and-forget extension). It really sits in the groove, not a single part sticks out and it doesn't stick to anything. At this point it feels snug enough that I don't have to worry about it falling out and loose enough that I don't have to worry about damaging my card reader. It could have gone a little better with the aluminum as it's a bit shiny and similar to chrome. I store my iTunes library on a 128GB SanDisk Ultra microSD card that I bought to use with. I haven't had any problems yet. All in all, the adapter works very well. I didn't even have to reinstall it after putting the MacBook to sleep and waking it up multiple times a day. It runs as fast as the card you put in it and I haven't noticed any significant battery drain since using it. ***** For those interested in the more technical aspects of this adapter: I can read and write to the microSD card it contains at an average of 720 Mbit/s (about 90 MB/s). The speed of the microSD card is the only limiting factor, the adapter will operate at any speed that currently sold microSD cards offer. I tested the battery life extensively, since doubling the amount of memory doesn't help if I can only use half the time. Before installing the adapter, I achieved 14 hours 32 minutes 15 seconds of iTunes movie playback from files stored on my internal SSD. After installing the adapter, transfer the iTunes library to the microSD card and run the test again. I was happy to know that my MacBook lasted 13 hours 48 minutes 51 seconds. Personally, I found the 44 minute reduction in playback time acceptable, especially as the files were being played from a microSD card over a much slower interface. Power consumption when using this adapter is 180mA as measured by the System Information tool in Mac OS X El Capitan. while watching videos stored on the card.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • too stupid
