Review on Rugged Radios H41-CF Carbon Fiber Behind The Head Two Way Radio Headset: Volume Control, 3.5mm Jack for Music / MP3 Players by Ronald Reese

Good headset but bad mic

I use a wireless headset in professional races and this headset provides good hearing protection. Machines are very loud and can cause permanent hearing damage if the sound is not muted. The earbuds on this headset have a firm fit, which is necessary to block out background noise. The microphone in this headset is not very good and produces very poor sound. Despite being a noise-cancelling microphone, it appears to cancel transmitted audio as well. I called Rugged Radio tech support about this issue and was told that the microphone should be aimed squarely at the center of the user's mouth, almost touching the lips. Despite these warnings, the microphone must not be used. To make sure my radio wasn't to blame, I tried using the mic on two other radios from different manufacturers. The same goes for very poor sound on all three radios I've used with this headset. By the way, I used a special Rugged Radios cable for my radio station. Note: This headset does not come with a cable to connect your radio. The cable provided for your radio must be purchased separately. The headset is equipped with a 5-pin mini XLR socket (Airbus plug) as an interface connection for the radio cable. It also has a 3.5mm jack on the other side of the headset, which allows you to connect a device like a scanner, iPod or similar with a 3.5mm jack. This can be useful as I can carry a main radio connected to a mini XLR and a radio scanner connected to a 3.5mm jack. I can listen to 2 radios at the same time and/or use the scanner as a backup. Despite the poor performance of the microphone, this is a nice and effective headset for canceling loud noise.
