This RC car is quite fun to drive through mixed terrain, the way it moves through a park reminds me of a pet dog or wild squirrel. While proportional control (varying power/speed/turn radius based on how far you push the joystick) and lithium batteries are the norm on cheap quadcopter drones since they are necessary for even basic operation, you have to climb fairly high up the price ladder to find the same features in RC cars. Cheap RC cars, even ones that are big or have detailed exteriors and complex functions, often only use single speed motors that make for jerky, unrealistic movements that greatly reduces enjoyment. In contrast, this RC car has a 4WD system with open differential, finely steerable front wheels and independent shock absorbers, all combining to produce a enjoyable and realistic RC car experience despite the cartoonish exterior. The charger consumes 9W of wall power and is rated for 7.4W output, taking about an hour to charge the 6.29wh battery. A best practice would be to set a timer and disconnect the charger after 1 hour. The battery is rated for 20 minutes of heavy use, I was able to drive it for 30 minutes of mixed use – some at max power, some at walking speed, with plenty of battery left to spare. The car uses an easy pin system for removing/securing cover and battery. The included screwdriver is not needed for basic operation. The battery is easy to connect and disconnect from the car, the connector is not overly tight unlike some other RC cars. The remote control uses 3x alkaline 1.5v AA batteries (not included) but also works fine with my 1.5V lithium rechargeable AAs. I like being able to trim the steering remotely, and set the trim and throttle sensitivity for higher/lower speeds. The high ground clearance and closed top cover does protect against very shallow puddles and light rain, but the electronics are not sealed whatsoever and deeper water or internal splashes will be bad for the car. The reason the electronics are not sealed is, aside from cost, to also improve cooling for the powerful motor. The downside of the interior not being sealed is if you drive this through the grass, a lot of foreign matter will get inside, which is not easy to clean if you then want to drive it in the house. The car doesn’t make much sound, mainly a bit of whine from the motors and rattling from the gears. There is certainly a learning curve needed to prevent the car from barreling somewhere you don’t want it to go, though the bumper and soft shell does help mitigate damage and make crashes somewhat forgiving. Preventing accidental inputs requires a certain degree of discipline, there were multiple times when I almost drove this into a pond or the road because I carelessly brushed against the controls while talking to someone.Overall, this car is a fine introduction to hobby grade remote controlled fun!
