I have read the manual several times and can't get along with the modes. The default 24/7 mode doesn't let you adjust the light output, but supposedly you can set the "day" period to be shorter. I tried it twice, reading the instructions out loud as I went, and the moonlight cycle (which you can inexplicably set. but not daylight? Why?) accidentally turned on in the middle of "day". if you want to do the DIY mode, yikes. The interface is a mess and none of the keystrokes are intuitive. All I needed was a lamp that would turn on, adjust the power level as needed, and then turn off either manually or with a simple timer. I want 2 4 hour photoperiods. This is only possible if you want to go through a wildly confusing sequence of key presses and guess what the translation might mean. I don't think you can just turn it on/off, adjust the wattage and set the timer to 3/6/12 hours like you can on basic models with built-in controls. and to make things even more complicated, if there is a power failure, the device will completely reboot! LAUGH OUT LOUD! Imagine spending time programming this and then accidentally turning it off while cleaning the tank etc. I'll be keeping an eye on the "stock" suggestions for other lamps, so maybe I can bring them back and find something that wasn't fully designed by pretty much half. Update: I've had it for a few weeks now and the light has warped and no longer sits flat on the tank.
