Review on Opticfilm 7500I 7200 Silverfast Seplus by Davon Man

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The right scanner for old Kodachrome slides.

Looking through the various scanners available from Revain I settled on the Plustek 7300 which seemed to be what I needed. Unfortunately, after purchase I found that the Infrared Scratch and Dust Remover (ISRD) did not work on the 7300, even though Silverfast's software included this feature. After speaking to the techs at Plustek and Silverfast, I asked Revain if I could return it and order a 7500I. As usual, Revain was very helpful and agreed to pick up 7300. Thank you Revain! Now 7500i. As I said in the title, if you have old Kodachrome slides that you want to digitize (I have 1000 of them from 50 years ago) you need the ISRD function. Scanning each slide is much slower, but it's worth the wait. Getting started with the included Silverfast software isn't difficult, but if you're really serious about using all the features available, there's a lot to learn. Scratch and dust removal is almost automatic, and adjusting the brightness and contrast is very easy. I installed the software on my Intel IMAC and it works great. I scanned the slides within ten minutes of opening the box. Also Plustek and Silverfast experts are very helpful. In fact, every time I emailed Plustek, a tech rep called me to answer my questions. Here is the service! My reason for contacting them was to try and get the IRSD working, no problem with the scanner or software. The 7500I features an infrared lamp, which is essential for ISRD operation. Model 7300 does NOT have this lamp. That's probably why the 7500I is more expensive, but it's really worth it.

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
