Monroe and MOOG for shocks, struts and suspension

After reading the reviews I bought one of these and a MOOG K160228 for my 2008 Mazda Speed3. Both sets are new, solid, well made and similar in size. I didn't weigh them, but the MOOG mounting plate seemed heavier to me. MOOG also included three mounting screws and a washer. The difference I noticed was in the spring bearings. Both seemed to have enough lubrication as evidenced by some of the lube leaking between the cap and body. Monroe's spin was sticky and a bit gritty. MOOG was much softer. He also felt more substantial and precise in his movements. I also noticed that the Monroe had more clearance on the outside, where the lid has a lip that extends beyond the body of the mount, and on the inside, where the lid's skirt doesn't seem to drop down as far as the MOOG. . I can't say if any of these stats make a difference, but it might indicate that the Monroe is more susceptible to water and dirt accessing the bearings. In the photos, MOOG is on the left. The difference in the columns is clearly visible, as are the internal stiffeners, which seem to be more significant. I haven't installed them yet. They are installed with Koni FDS struts and stock springs at my local import specialty shop, which has all ASI mechanics and is a NAPA Authorized Service Center.
