Review on Cooper Atkins 35100 K Aquatuff Waterproof Thermocouple by Matthew Outlaw

This is a great K type thermocouple reader. This is the third one I have bought and although expensive the previous two lasted 10 years before they failed. In both cases, however, the fault was the power button, which became intermittent and wouldn't turn on or off after a while. If it does, then (until you get a new one) you have a fallback procedure to turn it on (the auto shutoff still works with the faulty switch), just open the battery compartment and close it again. It wakes up whenever a new battery is installed or power is applied, so it looks like you've successfully turned it on (okay for five minutes before it turns off). This can be fixed by changing the design, but this is a very old design and probably not worth the investment in the quantity sold (and even less if they were to fix the switch).
