There are no instructions so I had to think about it a bit. I originally had it vertical and it wouldn't work unless you flex the rod, which I didn't want to do. After some thought, I tried turning it on its side. Try the male end on the van and the female end on the door. This would cause the door to open too wide and hit my arm behind the canopy. After installing it with a plug on the door, everything worked fine. One concern is that it might be too strong, if someone tries to force the door shut it may rip out the screw. Could have given five stars if there were instructions on the packaging for various installation methods.
