Review on Beck Arnley 081 3214 Brake Shoe by Kevin Caldwell

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Works well but requires a little modification

I installed it on my 2009 Toyota Corolla LE. Even with 78,000 miles on the factory units, there was still plenty of meat left. They developed a slight knock that gradually got worse and I had to flush the brake fluid so I went ahead and replaced it whenever I could and wherever I wanted. In the end when I installed them along with a new brake kit (Raybestos H17448), new brake drums (Beck Arnley 083-3371) and a brake fluid flush/fill/bleed they worked great. Most of the stopping power comes from the front brakes, but they in turn are as smooth and quiet as the day I drove home. However, they won't work that way, which is why I gave them 4 stars. It was not possible to reassemble the drum (new or original) on the axle above the shoes after installation. The problem is that the tabs on the front of the pads, where they connect to the wheel cylinder, were longer than on the factory pads. Each of them was about 3/16 inch longer, which added up was enough to keep the drums from starting up again. They appeared identical to the factory blocks in every other respect, and it even looked like the factory blocks were originally cast the same way and then sanded. The solution was simple - 15 minutes with a metal file and a vise and all 4 were ready to be rocked. .If you have a bench grinder, it takes every 2 minutes. I have attached some photos showing the factory unit on the right and one on the left showing the difference and my modification.
