I bought the 500GB and replaced the m.2 with a larger hard drive with my work environment on it and I boot from it and although it's not as fast as a local hard drive the Thunderbolt 3 interface fast enough . Tip if you try to open this drive to update it. You need to remove the rubber strips on the bottom that hide the screws. Don't worry, they'll be right back. You will then need something like a very small flat head screwdriver to gently pry off the bottom panel. You then need to remove a few other very small screws and then carefully pry the board out using the side notches. You don't have to force anything and then you can replace M.2 with any memory size.
