Makes a nice noise but not enough horsepower to feel it.

I have used these K&N intakes on both of my previous machines and love them. I installed it on my 2011 Nissan Xterra. I was hoping for better power and mpg, but I already knew that what you really get is a PLEASANT sound and a large increase in throttle response. It's true that you get 10-15 horsepower, but you might not get anything in a 5000-pound truck. It is NOT noticeable. The same goes for MPG. People will be demanding a better MPG, but I doubt they've ever taken a noticeable hit from it. MAYBE 0.5MPG if they're being generous. It's too low to be sure it's any better. In my opinion you can ride a different route or take it a little easier on a skinny pedal and see the same effect. The temperature or composition of the EtOH gas can do the same. So forget MPG and HP. You pay for the sound! At around 4000 rpm the truck squeaks. Until then it's pretty quiet, really imperceptible, but once you hit 4000 rpm. oooooooo boy, that sounds good. In combination with my Flowmaster muffler the truck sounds fantastic under torque. I've activated a few car alarms in garages with just my little 4.0 liter V6 engine. The throttle seems to be a bit quicker too, but that's hard to judge. I had some issues with the kit during installation. First I was missing a screw. It was easy enough to get through so it wasn't a big problem. Second, the rod supporting the air intake sleeve where it enters the closed box wasn't bent properly. No matter how I tried to install the filter, it rubbed against the metal from underneath. This eventually caused the filter to wear out and burned a hole in the filter where it rubbed (K&N later replaced both the filter and hardware and it cost me no cost to fix this issue). I found out after a few days and had to fix the filter with thick epoxy to plug the hole. I then clamped the bracket in a vise and bent it to hold the filter higher above the metal. I should have done that right away when I noticed it was rubbing, but in hindsight. I would suggest that you also buy a pre-filter as it will reduce the hassle of cleaning the filter. This one fits: http://amzn.com/B00062ZXP4 All in all, if you're desperate for MPG or HP, forget it. BUT if you want to get the right sound this is what you need, especially if you have a muffler or header. . My temporary solution was to clean it with MAF cleaner and that seems to have fixed the nature of the problem. After weeks of trying to clean the MAF I gave up and had to buy a new one. So far I haven't had any problems with the new MAF in 2 months. I suspect that after re-oiling, I put the filter back in too soon and thereby permanently contaminated the sensor. So a word of caution. Do not overfill the oil and let it dry for more than 24 hours. filter when you clean it. Also give it enough time to dry. UPDATE 5/26/2015: My MAF sensor error came back this week. I haven't lubricated the filter in months and it's a NEW MAF so not sure why. K&N STATES that their oil does not affect the mass airflow sensors. When literally thousands of people come online and complain that they all get the same type of error after installing a K&N air intake, that's a pretty clear indication that something in their product is causing problems. If it's not the oil in the filter then it's something else in the intake that is causing so many different cars to throw MAF errors. indicates the sensor is performing within 1% of OEM specification. So now I need to take this to my dealer and see if I can get them to fix this issue without blaming the recording. UPDATE November 9, 2016 After replacing the K&N filter, replacing the MAF twice, and wrapping the K&N in a pre-filter, I still have no solution to the cause of the MAF failure. K&N suggested I throw the stock airbox and filter back in the truck and see if the MAF error comes back. I tested this for a month and the error is gone. To their credit, after discussing this with K&N, they offered me a FULL REFUND for the set even though I bought it years ago. They also replaced some of the hardware, mounts and the filter itself along the way, also tested my MAF and spent hours troubleshooting via email/phone. In short, K&N stands behind its products and cares about its customers. . I always dealt with the same person, based here in California, who answered the phone right away, called me back every time, and kept me up to date on K&N's internal processes along the way. While this setup didn't work for me, I would definitely buy K&N again because of it's worked on previous cars in the past and the fact that K&N has been so diligent in trying to fix a problem, even if it became one sale at a loss. That's how customer service works! UPDATE 2/27/2017: The truck runs fine with the stock airbox and filter. A real bummer because there is a noticeable drop in throttle response. However, the truck has to be reliable, so this time K&N missed the mark. Maybe the valance would work better.
