I've always used hard shell knee pads. Last month I laid a lot of pavers for various garden projects. The hard pads protect my knees but they don't stay in place and the straps cause pain in the backs of my knees. I bought them hoping they would feel better. Well this morning I laid about 40 more pavers which meant a lot of time kneeling in mud, sand or cement. These pads stayed in place, the straps didn't chafe against the backs of my knees even though I was wearing shorts, and the front of my knees felt good. They were also comfortable to wear while walking/standing, which is very uncomfortable with hard pads. The black part of the pads is flexible but stiff. It's like a flexible, granular polymer, like rubber with sand, but much better. It held up with no labor damage that the hard case style would at least leave scratches. After only 5 hours of heavy use I can't comment on durability but there are clear signs of wear on the inside of the pads as sand got between the pad and the knee. No cracks or anything, but the material is worn. I don't think that's significant and suspect they'll last quite a while. Overall I'm very happy I bought them and have no problem recommending them or buying them again.
