The value is excellent. Never once did I second-guess my decision to purchase it. Excellent picture quality for such a compact device, and it operates on the tried-and-true point-and-shoot method. I have used it successfully without a flash in a semi-dark studio. It has a fast lens for a tiny camera, a zoom that is greater than the normal three, easy-to-use controls, a small form factor (you can fit it in your pocket), excellent matrix and jpg post-processing (allowing you to take images in low light without a flash), and high-quality video. Negatives include a battery that dies too quickly, a sluggish autofocus, and an overwhelming number of shooting modes.
