Makes smelly humidifiers

I'm new to the world of humidifiers. I ordered the Honeywell HCM350B Germ Free Cool Mist Humidifier because I needed a Cool Mist humidifier that was easy to clean and maintain. When I placed my order I immediately realized I would need filters and like any discount customer I spent an hour comparing Honeywell brand filters to these Durabasic filters. These filters were cheaper and had the same good reviews, so I decided to save money. The humidifier came with a Honeywell filter so I was set for the first month. As a new humidifier owner, I had no idea humidifiers needed cleaning. I knew I had to turn the filter over and refill the water tank every day, but had no idea the bowl and water tank needed cleaning every week. At the end of the month my husband asked if I had cleaned the humidifier yet and I was confused. I told him I would change the filter and he said to google how to clean the humidifier. Yes, our humidifier was pretty uncomfortable. I rinsed the sump and water tank with vinegar and water, sprayed the fan with compressed air, took out a new Durabasic filter, soaked it in cold water, and reassembled everything. I turned everything on and within 12 hours there was an odor. The filter was still wet, the tank half full, but the smell was there. Also, our bedroom got dry. I threw away the first Durabasic filter and tried a new one. I washed the tray again with soap and water, rinsed the water tank and wet the filter thoroughly. Reassemble and the smell is gone. Three days later the smell returned. The Honeywell filter didn't smell after 22 full days, and even after 30 days with the green shell on the bottom, it still didn't smell like mold. I went ahead and ordered more Honeywell filters. I repeated the cleaning process and replaced the Durabasic filter with Honeywell. Five days have passed and there is no smell. I'm not sure why Honeywell filters work better, but it's worth the extra money if I suspect cleaner air coming through my humidifier.
