Most wire brushes that use these spiral wire designs are oriented so that the outer circumference of each spool is designed to move through the space between the wire elements. It makes visual sense, but once you've used it and played around enough to try rotating the entire brush 90 degrees to the side, you'll find that the "common sense" visual impression doesn't match actual function matches. This brush works better, more regular and easier. It's narrower, meaning the strip is narrower but requires fewer iterations for burned areas and therefore works better overall. I suspect it will continue to be oriented in this way for a long time.
