I am taking this supplement containing Sam-E and a higher B complex multivitamin. I have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder and have tried many medications (both prescription and over-the-counter) and I definitely prefer it. Okay, here is my experience with this supplement: Benefits: Acts as a sedative for me. Helps me deal with racing thoughts and excessive anxiety/thinking. The bad things that happen to me don't seem like much to me. I noticed a noticeable improvement in sleep despite taking this capsule in the morning. Also, it has contributed to the disappointment of both myself and those around me as I don't worry that much. This tablet is much easier to swallow if you tilt your chin down so it floats toward the throat. I noticed the benefits quickly: less than a week after I started adding it to my regimen. Cons: The only real downside I experienced was something I wasn't expecting AT ALL: I started having very vivid dreams within the first month of taking this supplement. Well, I wouldn't say they were nightmares per se, but it was as if all the stress and anxiety I'd been saved from during the day immediately accumulated in my brain as I slept. I had stressful dreams about things going wrong at work and at home, and because they were so vivid, I woke up the next morning very excited and anxious. It got so bad that I stopped taking this supplement for a few days. But the calming effects and general mood improvement I experienced throughout the day wore off and I'm getting used to it now. .I feel better. So I survived and tried again: after 5 weeks the distressing dreams were completely gone. I only take it once (every 3 weeks or so) and most likely it has nothing to do with the supplement. Overall, I would recommend this supplement to anyone looking for relief. Just be patient when adding new supplements or mood altering drugs! A NOTICE. Please note that finding the balance between mental health supplements and prescribed medications takes time, dedication, and an open mind. No form of nutritional supplement should be taken without the expectation that it will take a little physical and mental effort on your part to reach your maximum level of performance. Even with 5-HTP, a successful mental health day for me involves other nutritional supplements, exercise, talking to a confidante (therapist or otherwise), and daily mindfulness.
