I'm trying to find an empty electrical conduit pipe buried with the stringline. The channel is probably two to three feet deep. The pipeline runs from a junction box under the paved road and ends somewhere under a large flower bed. I have a rough idea of where the pipeline is hidden and I was hoping this device would save me time digging around trying to find it. However, when I connect the transmitter to the spur wire (red clip to wire, black clip to grounded screwdriver) and move the receiver back and forth an inch or two off the ground, it makes a loud squeak when I'm further away from where the line, and becomes absolutely silent when passing over a place where the line is likely to be buried. If I read the instructions correctly (and watched the numerous youtube videos correctly), the device should sound loudest near a cable. I'm not an electrician, but I can connect the dots - I can draw a straight line from the junction box under the driveway to the flower bed, and each dot on that line is where the receiver is. quiet - no noise at all. I wonder if this is some kind of malfunction. I've also noticed that the receiver makes a very loud noise when I bring it close to a metal fence that's in the same area as the pipeline, but not only is the fence not live, it's not even with my trace wire comes into contact. Guess I'll have to dig anyway - I was hoping for more convincing results.
