- An OBD scanner typically identifies oxygen (O2) sensors by block number (B1 = block 1; B2 = block 2) and sensor number (S1 = sensor 1; S2 = sensor 2 etc.). Bank 1 is not on the same side of the engine on every car. Bank 2 is the opposite bank from bank 1. Sensor 1 is the pre-catalyst sensor. Other terms: upstream sensor, downstream sensor. Sensor 2+ usually refers to the post-catalyst sensor(s). Other terms: downstream sensor, sensor after cat.
