I have a 55 gallon filter that I use to quarantine fish and plants and also have a sort of 'pet' in in addition to aquariums for raising fry to have in my office. massive algae explosion. real flower. Massive cloud of algae. The worst. I've tried water changes and power outages with minimal effect. I have attached photos. Isn't that what everyone comes for? Photo. I had biological mechanical carbon bags on this tank. old Fluval 303 and the mentioned water changes. I once had a diatom filter and thought about getting another one. I stumbled across this because you can "charge" this filter with diatoms. I ordered a cheap diatomaceous earth powder from another source which was a better deal than what I could get here and I ordered a filter from Revain as it was the best deal, way less than what the pet stores sell that filter for important part. I got the filter and attached it to the front of the aquarium where I could see it. It was so cloudy and green I couldn't even see the back panels properly to attach the filter. I couldn't see much at all. The camera really seems to see more than I could. I installed a Micron "buffing" filter and turned off the light for 2 days. The second image you see, with the filter moved to the sidebar, is the result - a slight improvement I could still see a bit more. I'm not saying the filter is useless in this form - not at all. It works well and flows very well, but it didn't help me much in my situation, maybe that's starting to help compared to what I've been using. I then filled the filter with diatoms (placed the filter in a bucket of aquarium water to keep it submerged and while it was running I scooped 6 tablespoons of diatoms). /DE. When the water becomes clear, it is "charged" with powder. Then I put the filter back in the tank and pretend to be a full member of society for a few hours. The final picture is the result after less than 3 hours in the tank. . Please ignore the dirty stained glass, in the previous condition I hardly had any reason to clean the glass. The tank is essentially crystal clear. The filter worked the same way. no BETTER than the old Vortex kieselguhr filter I burned years ago. Fiction! For the money this is a great tool. And saved me from huge headaches associated with turning off the lights, constantly changing the water and so on in hopes of reversing the green wave.
