A standard OBD splitter cable without a power switch will do if you only need power/ground. However, when both devices communicate using CAN, both devices start fighting over who is using it. A switched splitter is very convenient because you can connect one device on the switching side that is always trying to communicate with CAN and one that only occasionally communicates with CAN on the non-switched side. Turn off the switch if you want another device to take precedence. Makes life easier than constantly reaching down, connecting and disconnecting.
