The design is really unforgiving. If it doesn't get lost with a decent clearance between the plate and the wall, it's too close to the bottom rocker switch, causing one side of the switch to remain depressed. Even after trying to change it to make it work, it just didn't work. That means I replaced my entire switch for no reason.
