Ok after reading other reviews I expected a long install. The install was moderately difficult and I'm a guy used to installing things around the house. In fact, I had to give this thing up for a day. First impression: - I saw the rust on the ends as soon as I opened the box. The rust was visible through the plastic wrap. - This goal is a lot harder than it needs to be. be. I'm an engineer and gosh, this thing is incredibly difficult to install (assembly was a breeze) - there are no measurements to install the ends (hinge side and lock side), just a long strip of paper to help align the screws and brackets to facilitate from the fixed position (i.e. top of base, etc.). That would be easy if I needed that approach, but I installed it using a wicket fitting kit from the same manufacturer as the first step (see related review). So if you are plotting an angle with no fixed points, how can you align the end angles without taking measurements? ---> First I had to build this thing to align and then install. The plastic clips that hold the two metal parts of the gate together are fine. They will NOT tolerate a toddler jumping/jumping on the gate. I reinforced the slugs and closures with wide/thick zippers. They're transparent/off-white, so they don't look too bad. The white powder coating was peeling off in a few places. Very annoying and difficult to hide. It is likely that some impurities were not removed prior to processing. Installation Tips: 1.) I do NOT recommend installing this gate at the top of the stairs. It's definitely dangerous with these goals. If you have a toddler who can climb the gate, there is a small chance that the gate will collapse on the connecting brackets above, causing it to break and fall down the stairs. Also the end brackets on the gate and what they are attached to are made of plastic which can break with the same result. 2.) These are great gates to set at an angle to the bottom of the stairs which is why we bought them. You need a level, a little ingenuity and a lot of patience with this gate. 3.) If you are using a ladder mounting kit, I recommend attaching both hinges to plastic brackets for more stability (see photo). Small thin screws will fail sooner or later. 4) Ties are your friend to fasten various elements of these gates (see photo). Much luck!
