Crinkly Mess - Kitchen and Table Linen

I have recently changed all my kitchen towels and have bought many red and white towels from six different brands. I went a bit insane reading the reviews on absorbency, finish, thickness, etc. And now I feel compelled to expand the conversation because those towels, which looked downright beautiful when they arrived, are likely to be tossed onto a pile of rags. Why? In the washing machine they become a lump. I washed all the towels I bought in one load before using them. When I opened the dryer, Martha's aunts were the only ones who were a tangle of folds. I'm really not that picky. It's a mess. I'm also not the kind of person who is willing to pet them. I skipped loading a second time using the crease steam function my dryer has. No improvement. I'm including a photo on the left of Aunt Martha's towel, fresh out of the dryer, next to a Cotton Craft Scandia towel of exactly the same size and cheaper. All the other towels I've bought (some decorative, hand-printed, some utilitarian like this one) lay flat and look good, so I recommend looking elsewhere. And if anyone thinks I washed or dried them like that, I ask you, does washing a kitchen towel have to be finicky? I haven't actually done anything weird - warm regular cycles, that's all.
