Definitely makes a difference, I use it as a refuge substrate. Wash it once, but no matter what you will muddy in the water, this substrate is of course a mixture of very fine sand (as described in the instructions). Great stuff, definitely recommend. Update: I'm 6 months old and the pad works great. Keeps my phosphate levels around 0.01 (which is way too low to be honest). I had to dose and feed extra nitrates because the substrate works so well. However, any other method is recommended.
