Review on IO CREST 4 Port SATA III PCI-e 3.0 x1 Expansion Card Non-Raid with Low Profile Bracket – ASMedia 1064 SI-PEX40156 SATA Controller by William Lin

Revainrating 3 out of 5

ASMedia 1064 Slower than Marvel 8215 controller.

Comparison of two Crest I/O controllers. The ASMedia 1064 controller is smaller and has status indicators. It should be a faster PCIe 3, but my tests showed it to be slower than the Marvel 9215 controller. Maybe new drivers and utilities will help. The Marvel controller has a heatsink that gets hot. The ASMedia controller has no heatsink and generates no heat. A tiny driver CD is included with both controllers. You need to navigate to the controller installation folder. Other folders are for USB drivers etc. for other controllers. Don't install them. The instructions for both controllers are confusing. I only use the secondary controller for the hot spare drive and front panel hot-swap bays. It took a few tries for the ASMedia controller to work properly after the last boot from the bios. MSI Z390 Gaming Edge configured in RAID mode. The Marvel controller was much simpler.

Pros
  • I/O boards
Cons
  • Basically OK, but...
