We took them on a hike in Moab, Utah. When they arrived there was no noticeable odor and they were easily washed and dried before travel. They were very easy to roll up and attach with the 'string' provided to keep them compact for packing. We put them in our packed luggage. They don't stand up very well when filled, so you'll have to hold them by the top cap. Once the lids were filled and secured they didn't leak at all and we had them in our hiking bag, in our backpacks, attached to the belt loops. The carabiner is on the small side - you can't attach them to anything really wide or thick, but they are very easy to hold with a one finger carabiner if that gives you an idea of how wide/big it is. The bottle itself is soft - when drinking it is easiest to hold the plastic cap with one hand and lift the bottom of the bottle with the other hand. My 4 year old had no problem drinking from these bottles this way and didn't spill. I would recommend them to anyone looking to pack compact water bottles.
