This jacket is very light but feels quite warm. Got a big one and my almost 8 year old son carried it. It's long, so a medium would probably be better for him. That gives him plenty of room to grow, although I don't think it will take that long. There is already a hole on the cuff of one sleeve and on the fleece part. 2 different types of material are used, both outside and inside. One is waterproof and the other is fleece (which is used as a panel on each side and on the bottom of each arm). The fleece part of the tablet is super fast. This gives the jacket a more worn look. While my child isn't bothered by this, my 6 year old can't take bites. He couldn't wear this jacket because the sleeves are half fleece and half plain. There are fairly noticeable stitching joining the material. In general, he disappointed me a little. He's not super strong.
