Review on Advanced Primus IQ Electronic Brake Control by Tekonsha: Enhancing Performance and Safety by Adam Huper

Lots of pros and cons

Replaced a 20 year old Tekonsha with a new Primus this summer. I wasn't sure if the old one had enough power to brake my new trailer. Installation was very easy. I bought a wire harness for a few dollars that connected one end to the truck board and the other end to the new controller. I screwed in a new clip, snapped the new controller into the clip. Ready. This summer we drove about 3000 miles with the new controller. The Primus is easy to set up, especially compared to the old one where I had to level it every time I attached my trailer. The braking performance is smooth, easy to adjust and check, and the braking voltage is displayed in real time. My only complaint is the Boost mode that Tekonsha recommends due to the weight of the trailer compared to the weight of my truck. . It works great at speeds above, say, 30mph, but is incredibly annoying at low speeds. Boost mode activates the trailer brakes as soon as you touch the brake pedal, making smooth braking at low speeds impossible. After a minute or two in traffic or a parking lot, I'm invariably frustrated and awkwardly reach down and press the button three times to turn off the boost. Then I have to try to remind myself to turn it back on later. This feature should turn itself off at low speed! Otherwise no complaints!

  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • Not sure
