Review on ๐Ÿšด Enhanced Cycling Experience with Garmin Edge 25 GPS for Biking by Cody Cobbs

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Decent minimalist bike computer/GPS

I've been using this unit for about four months now. He replaced the Forerunner 305, which finally took its last breath. I looked at a number of more expensive alternatives, but I'm no big data scientist and this device delivered exactly what I needed. I am very happy with the device although there are a few issues that prevent it from being a five star product. Installation was pretty easy, but I found pairing my HRM and cadence sensor a bit trickier than I expected. The installation instructions state that you simply bring the sensors to the device and everything will take care of itself. I ended up trying several times to connect the sensors before everything worked properly. I'm not sure if the problem was that the instructions weren't clear enough (seemed simple) or maybe it worked the first time but didn't give an obvious confirmation, but it worked as expected. some bluetooth connection issues with my phone. At first the pairing was again a bit of a mystery. When I turn on the device and turn on Bluetooth on my phone, the device doesn't immediately show that it's paired (via the BT icon). This got me multiple times without having to try to pair the device again. Although the connection status isn't always clear, it always seems to work. I will say that quite often the device loses the Bluetooth connection and then reconnects it. The result is a beep and an on-screen notification, which can be a little annoying if it keeps turning off. I don't know if the problem is with the device's antenna or with my phone.3. When you pair a device with an HRM, the device automatically adds a screen to show your HRM and heart zone. I'm disappointed that this screen isn't customizable (i.e. you can't change the data shown). For example, I want to display my HRM with cadence or maybe mileage. One of the trade-offs of buying this device is that there is very limited screen real estate for the displays, inevitably requiring you to switch between more screens than you would with a larger device. Garmin can compensate for this problem with a better setting. After all, it's just software. One feature I miss on my old Forerunner is the incline indicator. It wasn't always that accurate on the Forerunner, but I liked having an idea of how steep my climb was. This feature requires a barometric pressure sensor in addition to the software so it may not fit in this small body, but if there was room for a sensor it would improve this device I think. Overall I am very happy with the device for the price and would buy it again.

Pros
  • Best in its niche
Cons
  • I vaguely remember
