Fuel Pump Replacement - My Notes

Replaced one of my fuel pumps on my 1987 Mercedes 560 SL Coupe. This pump fits perfectly and is bolted. The only complaint I have is that Bosch has to supply two new snap rings for the fuel return valve end cap. I was a little nervous about reusing the old two but it started right up and ran like a champ. I think it may have even solved my idle problem I had before changing the pump. A word of caution! I drained the gas tank to make it easier. Crimping the old fuel line as shown on You Tube was a bad idea in my opinion since the rubber hose was only 1.5" from the tank's hard line. Also, remember to disconnect the battery positive cable when working with fuel and electricity. The rear tire does not need to be removed. For my own safety, I raised and jacked up the rear. Block tires well with 4x4. or wheel chocks. Disconnect the electrical lines first, then the gas lines, and then loosen the pump and slide it out. Electrical cable lugs come in two different sizes. Large - negative. Small is positive. That's the only thing I can say, the Germans simplified this project. Use 17mm sockets, an open end wrench and an 8mm box end wrench. You will need a medium Phillips screwdriver for tubing connections and a mounting bracket. Be sure to attach the electrical grommets to the terminals when you're done. Good luck and happy driving!
