This is such a poorly designed device compared to all the others. Sandwiches and whole dishes that they show you making are utter nonsense. This device is basically a press and what you are seeing here is regular grilled cheese, not with tomatoes or onions or anything special but with TWO slices of regular cut provolone cheese and because of the press it's leaking all over the place. It would work for a slice if it was the smallest, just the softest bread, and even there I doubt it would be satisfactory. If you do NOT press, only the trailing edge will cook. Buy the Hamilton Beach model instead, it has an adaptive rear hinge that accommodates sandwiches of any thickness.
