Review on 🎀 Cloud Microphones CL-1 Cloudlifter Mic Activator: Enhancing Audio Performance with Cloud Technology by Greg Bellman

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Simple and efficient, great for Shure SM7B

Knowing the preamps on my pair of audio interfaces didn't offer much gain, I bought the CL-1 the same day I got my Shure Ordered SM7B (whose manual recommends using preamps with 50dB gain) just in case. I've heard some concerns about the Cloudlifter device - people said it cuts off low frequencies or otherwise discolors the sound, so I ran some tests on day one of ownership. I recorded live vocals and a boosted drum loop, first through just my interface's preamp and then through the cloudlifter, reducing the gain on the interface to match non-cloudlifter recordings. I used the RME Fireface UFX as the interface for my test recordings. I turned on phantom power for the mic input when recording with the Cloudlifter (to power the CL-1) and turned it off for direct interface recording. I hear no difference between recordings and usage When analyzing the features of Audacity and Wavelab, I could not find any visible differences between the recordings in terms of the frequency spectrum used. I firmly believe that the CL-1 does exactly what it was designed to do: provide your mic signal with 25dB of clean, transparent gain before it hits your interface or mixer.

Pros
  • Good product for the price
Cons
  • Clarity

Makes your SM7B louder with your cheap preamp. No difference to noise floor.

Works...clean average gain for an SM7B.
