Occasionally my cat will miss the middle of the crate and urinate outside the crate. Eventually, placing the box directly on the ground can result in discoloration of the wood and an unpleasant odor. In addition, you need a larger mat so that the cat has a few steps. This large mat solves both problems. It's waterproof, so if it doesn't end up in the box, it'll end up on the mat instead. The loosely woven fabric of the rug really absorbs the remnants of cat litter left in the box. Very easy to clean by shaking or rinsing. from some diarrhea that got in there. I've tried a number of cleaners including bleach and the stain seems to have dried well so it's brown now. Consider buying a brown carpet :-). But again, this product is amazing and solves both the traceable litter problem and the urination problem when my cat skips the crate (typical boy!).
