Review on ASUS VG34VQL1B Adjustable DisplayHDR DisplayPort, 165Hz Refresh Rate, Flicker-Free, Tilt, Height, and Swivel Adjustments by Gary Alexander

Revainrating 3 out of 5

I really wanted to like this monitor, but there were a few issues that caught my eye.

I really like this monitor, but there are some issues that I cannot forgive. The main issue was the backlight flickering that I experienced when Freesync was enabled. It wasn't like that in every game, but in many. Sometimes it was barely noticeable, but other times it was very bad and irritated my eyes. Sometimes there were red or green artifacts as well, like in the video I provided, especially around these plants. I was able to minimize most of this by lowering the overdrive setting to 20 or 0. But at 0 the black blur made it more obvious. For me, the black blur was pretty subtle during gameplay, but it was a little annoying when scrolling through white. Text on black background. Overall I think I could deal with that if I could fix the flicker issue. I fiddled with the settings for several days but couldn't get rid of the flickering. Unfortunately I ended up returning the monitor and buying an Acer Nitro XV340CK which isn't as bright but doesn't have the issues it did. It's a shame because apart from those few issues I was very happy with it.
