These are my essential mixing bowls that I use for a variety of purposes. I was impressed with the size, durable jar, compact stacking and good quality lids and cooking with them was a pleasure. These are some of the nicest mixing bowls I've ever used, but also one of the cheapest (I have an 8 piece set). The tempered glass that these Pyrex Essentials items are made of works very well for my needs. Like glass, it doesn't alter the taste like other materials. As a toughened soda-lime quartz glass, it is strong and can withstand high temperature cooking/baking/cleaning/shocking. It can be used in the dishwasher for easy cleaning. With a good lid design, they're great for liquids (e.g. for soaking beans) and reduce clutter. Because they are compact, I find them easy to store. I also really like how transparent they are. And I use this to my advantage (e.g. looking for clumps of unmixed flour that might be on the bottom or sidewall). The size itself is also a real plus point. This wide range of sizes, from the small 1 liter to the huge 4 liter means they can handle jobs of any size. Finally, I love how the cups used the flared hem at the top. While the purpose is to allow a lid to be used in these bowls, I find that it reduces spills and gives you much better leverage when holding the bowl and stirring something thick (like dough). The only potential downside is that some people may not like the weight of these shoes. Because they use thick tempered glass, they are quite heavy. Personally I like this a lot as I find it helps make the bowl more stable but some people may not find the weight to their liking. I am also very happy with the price of the purchase. First off, good mixing bowls don't come cheap, let alone good mixing bowls that are clear and have a great lid. At less than $8 for a bowl and lid, I think it's great value. Overall these are just great mixing bowls and I don't think you can go wrong. ===It is worth noting that modern domestic Pyrex containers are NOT currently made from borosilicate glass. Up until about 2000 it was borosilicate glass, now it's a toughened soda-lime quartz glass made by another company. This can be interesting in terms of the differences between ancient borosilicate glass and current soda-lime fused silica. Borosilicate glass is more or less heat resistant and better able to withstand extreme temperature changes, while soda-lime glass tends to be slightly more resistant to impact damage. Borosilicate is also more expensive to manufacture, and Pyrex's use of soda-lime glass is probably the main reason they can offer a quality mixing bowl set (with lid) for not much more than an inexpensive economy set (without lid).
