The tops of the baskets are not attached, but when folded and pulled into the jar, they fit tight enough that the tops don't come loose. You just have to be careful to put them in and take them out in a certain way (by stacking them on top of each other and turning the jar upside down), that's really no problem. It's nice to have a large water tank and more baskets so you don't have to bring coffee and clean it after each fill.
