I live in a rural area that doesn't have an analogue state patrol, so half the purpose of an analogue scanner is lost. As others have pointed out, this can make a handheld scanner too heavy. If you're listening to the 400 band, it works fine without the extension. If you prefer to listen to the 100 band, extend the antenna about halfway. Expand it fully for even lower frequencies (e.g. listen to truckers on their CB radios). All I can say is that it reduces blur when you're close to another scanner, which a standard antenna can't do.
