After receiving this belt kit I had mixed opinions. On the one hand I find it a good product, but on the other hand it's not quite what I wanted. So what is it? Mechanism with plastic buckle. Each side of the strap has a loop at the end; To "install" it, simply wrap the end of the loop around the pole on the post and thread the strap through the small loop. This provides a secure attachment that requires no hooks or tools, so unlike ratchet straps, the straps will not loosen if tension is lost. So far, so good. But here's the thing - only one "side" of the strap is made of "elastic" bungee material. The other side consists of a non-stretch nylon thread that can be tensioned with a plastic tulip mechanism (think of the adjustable chin strap on a helmet, for example). What's wrong with that? Well basically since it can't stretch much the cable gets longer to allow for more stretch and that leaves you with extra cable hanging slack when tightening the strap for light loads. There is a loop at the end of the strap so you can thread the ends of the strap through the buckles to keep them from hanging around as much. But if you leave them on your rack, the amount of loose straps becomes unmanageable and you may forget to just slide a small object under the strap like you might with a bungee. I got around this by running a long strap over the rack and back, effectively shortening the overall length of the strap when not in use. This will shorten the extra strap to an acceptable length. But that means I have to "roll out" the straps to unroll them for larger items. The main advantage of this system is that it gives you a lot of flexibility when carrying oversized items because the strap can accommodate such a large size. . Personally, I'm more prone to lugging around small things, so unfortunately this utility is a bit wasted. I envisioned more elastic cords that I could just leave attached and slide my weight underneath, but that's not really the intended functionality of this product. I contend that the straps appear to be quite effective when used. You can tighten the adjustable strap and the "stretch" side will flex a little but still retain the pressure, meaning you have both the flexibility of a drawstring strap and the security of an elasticated strap. The straps are clearly visible, with a striking green color. They are described as "reflective" but I'm not sure I agree - they are highly visible but lack reflective properties like reflective tape, reflective tire sidewalls or standard bike reflectors. Verdict: They're pretty good. , but before you buy, make sure that this type of attachment mechanism is really what you need. If you want to carry large items on a rack this might be ideal, but if you're trying to put something small on a rack you might as well stick with a bungee.
