Used as a pre-filter on the HOB inlet. Very easy to cut and attach with a zipper. I removed a lot of dirt from my driftwood so my cartridges lasted MUCH longer. After a month of use (replaced once or twice a week) the new gasket sections started throwing small bits of plastic into my tank that my cartridge couldn't accommodate. Can be fatal to my fish (as another reviewer can attest). And yes, I washed it well beforehand. It's a shame, it's worked great so far. Update 05/24/20: Rating changed to 5 stars after my user error was discovered. I placed it on the desk with the stiffer side out. The water must flow through the soft side first as clearly explained in the instructions.
