I bought a 10lb bale of alfalfa. The hay was very fresh and my rabbit ate it enthusiastically. He smells AMAZING and he loves the taste. But it crumbled a lot, perhaps due to compression. The leaves are completely shed. As a result, most of them fall into the shell and die. With pressed alfalfa it might be inevitable, I don't know. Unless your pet is a rabbit, this probably won't be a problem; Rabbits are a special case because they eat through the tray. This was my rabbit's only food for several months. For a month I have been feeding him a mixture of alfalfa and grass hay. This way less alfalfa is wasted as the leaf bits tend to stick to the hay or fall to the bottom of the manger where he eats them.
