The non-contact voltage detector in this kit goes from hypersensitive to non-responsive and back again in a seemingly random way. Just holding it in the middle of my kitchen, easily two feet from any outlet, is enough for it to beep. On the other hand, I can plug it straight into an outlet that I know has power and get no beeps at all. I bought this to distinguish hot wires from neutral wires when rewiring some old outlets and it's utterly useless for this application. That's far from the accuracy I need for this. In my opinion, giving both false positives and false negatives is incredibly dangerous - you don't want to mess with electricity, you could die. I'm giving up and have already reordered a Fluke brand voltage tester. It might cost three times as much, but my life is worth it. You too. The three prong socket tester seems to work well, I already had one and used it for a while with no problems. But I would never trust the voltage tester in this kit.
