False alarms from the contactless voltage sensor

Today I tested both devices. Socket tester met my expectations. The non-contact voltage sensor did not meet my expectations. After some random testing, I concluded that the proximity sensor is likely detecting the presence of voltage. However, it seems to send a false positive signal to almost anything metallic. A watermelon and a screwdriver squeaked for me. How can I trust that to tell me something's wrong when fresh food creates a signal?

Pros
  • Ideal for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Some disadvantages

Too sensitive - unusable

Really loved it, but. The VD6504 Non-Contact Voltage Detector is overly sensitive and will respond within 5 inches of an AC power source. Because of this, it is impossible to determine which wire is hot. In the first picture you can see it's 5 inches from the outlet/cord, in the second it's 1 foot from the coffee maker (the outlet is on the back)! How to determine if the power source is in the coffee maker, coffee grinder, outlet, or lamp in the closet? A friend of mine loaned me a FLUKE…

Pros
  • Durable finish

The GFCI plug tester works great. non-contact voltage tester, not so much.

GFCI plug tester works as described and was very helpful. The portable non-contact voltage tester was very poor. He beeped and read the voltage at the outlet not receiving power, no. I touched the wires with my finger after making sure the switch was off and checked with a multimeter. No voltage. There is no explanation as to why he saw tension where there was none. Useless in my use. He recognized tension in random elements that had no tension. Buy a GFCI tester and a multimeter. Can't…

Two great tools in one bottle!

We are renovating our house. If you do any electrical DIY work (we've replaced our switches with rocker switches and new outlets/sockets), these two items are a must! Necessary. Always turn off the switch box BEFORE doing any wiring work. Sperry's voltmeter is accurate. Not overly sensitive (mentioned in some reviews) but can be a little difficult to use on walls with multiple outlets. Otherwise it worked great for me. Especially when I needed to test individual wires in a junction box. The…

Pros
  • Inspires confidence
Cons
  • I have no particular complaints about it, everything is fine

The voltage tester is useless, the socket tester is fine.

The non-contact voltage detector in this kit goes from hypersensitive to non-responsive and back again in a seemingly random way. Just holding it in the middle of my kitchen, easily two feet from any outlet, is enough for it to beep. On the other hand, I can plug it straight into an outlet that I know has power and get no beeps at all. I bought this to distinguish hot wires from neutral wires when rewiring some old outlets and it's utterly useless for this application. That's far from the…

Voltage sensor defective

I bought a non-contact voltage tester and socket tester a little over a year ago. The socket tester hasn't let me down yet, but I haven't used it that often either. The non-contact voltage tester (VD6504) is junk in my opinion. I always felt like it wasn't working as intended, like it was too sensitive. But I needed an accurate measurement when trying to find the burned out light in my Christmas garland. About 18 inches from the light it went out. The same happened near sockets. This might work

Very sensitive Best of multitesters

UPDATE 21/12: I have used several non-contact voltage (NCV) testers since purchasing this tester (which I still use today). I think it's fair to update my review to say that this tester is NOT unreliable. The problem is that it's very delicate. I have another NCV tester to test/fix Christmas lights. This one isn't as delicate as this one as the wires from the Christmas lights are exposed. This Sperry tester is sensitive enough to detect magnetic fields inside a wall. Initially I thought this…
